How to Buy a Violin (Beginner's Guide)

What should you consider when buying a violin?

If a violin is not made or tuned correctly, it is often not easy to play, especially for beginners. Many music stores don't specialize in setting up cheap instruments, our goal is to get the best out of each instrument. Our instruments are playable right out of the box (still need some tweaking). A good violin bow is also important. Our garments always include our popular carbon fiber bows. You can learn more about what to look for when buying a violin here .

How much do I need to spend to buy a decent instrument?

At Fiddlershop, you can get a well-made instrument that sounds great without spending a lot of money. For example, the violin set is only $449 and comes with everything you need right out of the box. For another $70, you can buy the popular concert violin (a Fiddlershop student bestseller). These are great money making tools. Violinist Pierre Holstein (aka) or another violinist on our staff will personally test each violin to ensure quality. Best of all, all of our instruments undergo our famous 10-point inspection.

Is it easier to play on a more expensive instrument?

Yes! Not only is it easier to play, but you also get a better sound and can hear the intonation more easily (if the notes are in tune), which motivates you and helps you improve faster. Fiddlershop also offers a wealth of learning resources to help you learn how to play the violin, how to improve your violin, and how to stay motivated with your violin practice.

If this fits your budget, we highly recommend our best-selling intermediate/advanced violins, the Master Violin ($1039) and Soloist Violin ($1599)! They have a total of over 170 5-star reviews with an average rating of 5.0 stars, so check it out for yourself!

What does a violin costume include?

Our violin kits include everything you need to get started. In addition to the violin, you will receive a case, bow, shoulder rest, rosin, and polishing cloth.

How do I ship the instrument? Is there any risk of damage during transportation?

We guarantee safe delivery and if anything happens, we will cover any costs. To put it in perspective: only a few violins have been damaged in shipping in the past 3 years (we ship thousands of violins via FedEx each year).

What type of warranty is included?

Everyone gets a 45-day money-back satisfaction warranty and return period. We also offer a 12-month warranty on products and parts (excluding "maintenance items" such as strings, bridges, rosin, etc.). If you're not satisfied with your instrument, simply return it for a full refund.

What if I want to upgrade?

If you order a new violin from us (one that requires a major upgrade), we will offer a trade-in. You should be able to get around 60-65% for a violin (provided it comes from us), depending on quality and shape.

Will a new violin sound better over time?

Yes, they will open up and sound better over time. You'll notice the biggest difference in sound after the first 3-4 months, but improvements will begin after 2 weeks of playing.
