How to choose the first cello for beginners?

How do I know the quality and sound of my cello is good enough?

First of all, when choosing your first musical instrument, you need to consult a professional. Either a music teacher or a good music store with good knowledge about cello. They can help you figure out how to get the most from your money.

If possible, it's always a good idea to go to a string instrument store and test out different cellos. Don’t forget to read reviews online and maybe talk to other musicians.

How much do I need to spend on my first cello?

You can buy a brand new cello for RMB 2,000 or US$300, but spending too little initially can backfire. Cheaper instruments are harder to play, which makes it easier for people to get discouraged and give up. Cheap instruments often sound poor.

For a decent beginner's cello, you'll need to spend about a thousand dollars. This should include the case, bow, and rosin. In addition to this, you may also need extra strings, music, and a music stand.

Should I rent or buy?

Do you think you'll be playing for many years, or is it possible you'll quit after a few weeks? Since buying a cello is a large investment, you have to compare the cost of leasing it with the loss you would incur by reselling an instrument that you barely play. Most stores will rent a new cello for at least $40 per month, depending on its value.

One thing to consider is that if you decide to buy a cello and need to sell it one day, the value of the cello won't depreciate that much.

Should I be worried about buying a cello online?

Read reviews of online businesses and choose someone you can trust. Make sure they have a flexible return policy and ask about their upgrade policy in case you want a better quality instrument in the future.

Can the merchant test some cellos for you and send you a comparison video? Did they carefully install the cello before shipping it to you? These are important questions to ask, especially if you are a beginner and don’t have much knowledge.

How big a cello does my child need to start?

Cellos come in different sizes. The 4/4 is a full size cello, suitable for cellists over 5 feet tall. There are also 7/8 size cellos, sometimes for smaller adults.

Other common sizes are 3/4, 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8. Generally, if you are about 4.5 to 5 feet tall, you will need a 3/4 size cello; if you are 4 to 4.5 feet tall, you will need a 1/2 size cello. But these are only approximate measurements. The best thing is to try the cello yourself.
